Giannis eligible for Heat extension now, but waiting until January could add years and dollars

The story

MIAMI -- Oct. 14, 2026 -- Giannis Antetokounmpo has been eligible to sign a contract extension with the Miami Heat since Oct. 1, but the money on the table today is smaller than what he can unlock by waiting, reports wrote, citing salary figures from reports.

The story

Helin framed the choice as a calendar play rather than a loyalty test. Antetokounmpo is expected to stay in Miami and help the Heat build around him and Bam Adebayo. The open question is which max structure he ultimately takes.

What he can sign now

According to Marks' numbers as reported by Helin, the maximum extension available immediately is about three years and $194 million. That is the ceiling while he is still inside the early post-trade window.

Why January changes the math

After Jan. 6 -- six months after the trade from Milwaukee was finalized -- the max extension jumps to roughly four years and $276 million, Helin wrote. That deal would replace his player option for next season, listed at about $62.8 million.

Why January changes the math

Antetokounmpo could also decline that option next summer, enter free agency and re-sign with Miami for about five years and $357 million.

Why January changes the math

Helin noted that Antetokounmpo has not left money on the table in past negotiations, and that Miami may prefer a four-year extension over a five-year free-agent pact. At 31 (he turns 32 in December), the timing of the next deal matters as much as the headline total.
