NBA Europe's business case

Oct 14, 2026

$50 billion market

Giorgos Aivazoglou says Europe's sports industry generates about $50 billion a year, and basketball captures less than half a percent.

16 clubs, 12 seats

NBA Europe would have 16 teams. Twelve would hold permanent places, giving owners and investors long-term certainty.

Four earned spots

The other four places would go to Basketball Champions League finalists and winners of qualifying tournaments tied to domestic leagues.

Two-tier pyramid

NBA Europe sits on top as a semi-open league, with FIBA's BCL beneath it as a fully open competition. The target start is 2027-28.

Open questions

Which clubs take the permanent places, what those seats cost and how media rights are sold are still to be decided.
