EuroLeague answers NBA Europe with a 24-team, €3.4 billion plan

A business plan, not a merger

Two weeks after turning down the NBA’s first proposal, the EuroLeague laid out a 10-year strategy approved by all 13 shareholder clubs.

The big numbers

The league projects €3.4 billion in payouts to clubs over 10 years: €2.2 billion from league revenue and €1.2 billion from expansion fees.

From 20 to 24 teams

The competition grows to 24 teams in 2027-28 with “practically two conferences,” president Dejan Bodiroga said. New teams will be named in mid-November.

Permanent franchises

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Olympiacos, Fenerbahce and the other shareholders turn their 10-year licenses into permanent ones without an entry fee.

“It’s going to be a disaster”

CEO Chus Bueno warned that if the NBA enters the market on its own, “it’s going to be a disaster. And they know, we know, and we don’t want that.”

“The telephone lines are open”

Bueno said the league will still listen to any NBA deal that makes sense for its clubs, as both sides race toward 2027-28.
