The Charlotte Hornets beat the Miami Heat 115-110 at Spectrum Center on Saturday, October 24, but only after a 23-point lead nearly vanished. Brandon Miller led everyone with 34 points, 19 of them after halftime, Dennis Schröder added 25 and Naz Reid 23 with five threes.
Miami won the fourth quarter 35-19 and tied the game at 104 before Charlotte found one more answer. Here are the moments both teams and the league posted from the night.
Game Center: Heat at Hornets, box score and play-by-play
Miller took 29 shots and lived at the line, making 11 of 12 free throws. This pull-up came with Charlotte already in front, and it set the tone for a night in which he finished plus-20, the best mark on the floor.
Moussa Diabaté's rim protection turned straight into offense, and Grayson Allen's triple capped a 15-0 burst. Charlotte won the third quarter 30-17, which is how the lead reached 23.
Down 100-85 with under nine minutes left, the Heat began to chip away. Davion Mitchell ran the comeback with 22 points and 10 assists, and Charlotte managed just four points over a long stretch as Miami's run grew to 27-4.
With the score tied at 104 and 3:21 to play, Allen drew contact on a three and made it, then hit the free throw. It stopped Miami's momentum cold and gave Charlotte a lead it never gave back. Allen finished with 20 points off the bench.
Thompson's fourth three of the night cut the gap to 110-107 with 1:16 left. The Hornets closed it out at the line, where both teams went 23 of 25 for the game.
The postgame handshakes told the story of a win Charlotte had to earn twice. The Hornets moved to 2-1, while Miami's comeback fell short despite 20 points from Bam Adebayo.
