Six East No. 1 seeds in six seasons

Oct 14, 2026

No repeat at the top

Detroit's 60-22 finish made the Pistons the sixth different team in six seasons to finish first in the East.

The six top seeds

Philadelphia, Miami, Milwaukee, Boston, Cleveland and Detroit each held the No. 1 spot from 2020-21 to 2025-26.

First is not a guarantee

Only the 2023-24 Celtics reached the Finals, and they won the title. Four of the six went out in the first or second round.

Last spring

Fourth-seeded Cleveland won Game 7 in Detroit 125-94, and No. 3 seed New York went on to win the championship.

2026-27 is open

The season tips off Oct. 20, and the last six years suggest the race for the top seed is wide open.
