Las Vegas expansion: Area15 arena pitch wins the mayor’s backing

Oct 14, 2026

The story

The race for a Las Vegas NBA team is now also about where it would play. Two arena pitches surfaced this week, one backed by Mayor Shelley Berkley.

The timeline

The NBA wants to decide by the end of 2026 whether to add zero, one or two teams. Las Vegas and Seattle are the only markets under formal review.

The Area15 pitch

Fisher Brothers, the firm behind Area15, proposed an 18,000- to 20,000-seat arena on land between Area15 and Palace Station, just west of I-15.

Mayor’s support

Berkley called the site “one of the premier development opportunities in the Las Vegas region” and wants a major team inside city limits.

A rival site

Resorts World Las Vegas says it met with bid groups about an arena on 42 acres it controls on the North Strip.

Three bid groups

Bill Foley with Jerry Colangelo, Nancy Walton Laurie with Bill Laurie, and Marc Lasry with Steve Apostolopoulos remain in the running.

The price

The expansion fee is reportedly expected to land between $12 billion and $13 billion, plus another $2 billion to $3 billion for a new arena.
