A 21-year-old rookie out of Miami made his NBA debut for the San Francisco Warriors at the Civic Auditorium.

A double-double right away

Rick Barry finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes, shooting 8 of 20 from the field.

But the Lakers won

Los Angeles took the home opener 122-115. Jerry West scored 36, and Barry's first win came four nights later against Cincinnati.

Help around the rookie

Paul Neumann scored 26, Guy Rodgers added 22 and 8 assists, and Nate Thurmond pulled down 27 rebounds.

The start of something

The No. 4 pick of 1965 went on to one of the most distinctive scoring careers the league has seen.
