DALLAS — Oct. 14, 2026 — NBA Communications put a rare rookie line on the board Wednesday: in 2025-26, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg joined Michael Jordan as the only rookies to lead their teams in total points, rebounds, assists and steals in a season since steals were first recorded in 1973-74. Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks open the 2026-27 schedule when they visit the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Flagg’s four-category lead for Dallas

According to Basketball-Reference, Flagg started all 70 games he played for Dallas and finished with 1,473 points, 466 rebounds, 316 assists and 84 steals — 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Those season totals led the Mavericks in each of the four categories.

The No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft earned the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy as Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, edging former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets in the media vote, NBA.com reported. Knueppel, per Basketball-Reference, made 273 three-pointers on 42.5 percent shooting (273-of-642), the most threes by a rookie in a season.

Four-category team leads for Flagg, 2025-26 (Basketball-Reference):

  • Points: 1,473 (21.0 per game)
  • Rebounds: 466 (6.7)
  • Assists: 316 (4.5)
  • Steals: 84 (1.2)

Jordan’s 1984-85 Bulls precedent

Jordan set the prior mark in his first Chicago season. Basketball-Reference lists him with 2,313 points, 534 rebounds, 481 assists and 196 steals over 82 games — 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.4 steals per night — while leading the Bulls in each category and winning Rookie of the Year. More than four decades later, Flagg is the first rookie NBA Communications cites as matching that four-stat team-lead club since steals became an official box-score line.

The 2026-27 regular season opens Tuesday, Oct. 20. Dallas’s first tip is the following night in Houston, the same matchup NBA Communications flagged when it resurfaced Flagg’s company with Jordan.
