Hawks pick up Asa Newell’s $3.56 million option for 2027-28

The Atlanta Hawks have exercised their third-year option on Asa Newell’s rookie-scale contract, the team announced Sunday. The decision locks in a $3.56 million cap hit for the 2027-28 season; Newell is earning about $3.4 million this season.
Newell, 21, was the 23rd pick in the 2025 draft out of Georgia. The Atlanta native averaged 5.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11.4 minutes across 44 appearances as a rookie last season.
Newell has not been part of coach Quin Snyder’s rotation early this season, but he recorded season highs of 13 points and four rebounds in just under 19 minutes in Saturday’s 121-99 loss at New Orleans.
Monday is the deadline for NBA teams to exercise third- and fourth-year rookie-scale options for 2027-28.
