A young rotation

Chapter 7

What 1-6 usually means

Six teams are 1-6: Chicago, Milwaukee, Utah, Sacramento, Brooklyn and the Clippers. A review of the game logs of every team since 2014-15 found 37 that were 0-7 or 1-6 after seven games, and only one finished at .500 or better: the 2024-25 Bucks, who went 48-34.

Final wins for the six best teams from a 0-7 or 1-6 start (scoring margin after seven games in parentheses)

2024-25 Bucks (-6.6)48
2014-15 Pacers (-3.4)38
2021-22 Pelicans (-6.7)36
2022-23 Magic (-4.7)34
2016-17 Pelicans (-7.6)34
2019-20 Pelicans (-5.0)30

All six teams that did best were outscored by 7.6 points a game or fewer after seven games. This year’s Bucks are being outscored by 13.0. Twelve earlier teams started 1-6 or worse with a deficit of more than 11 a game, and none won more than 28. A projection built on the seven-game record and margin puts Milwaukee at about 25 wins, with a margin of error of about nine either way.

Chapter 8

Wednesday at Boston

The Bucks play at the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. ET, which is 2:30 a.m. Thursday in Cairo. The Celtics are 5-2 and lost 109-93 at Houston on Monday.

Jayson Tatum is listed as questionable for rest. Payton Pritchard is questionable with a shoulder contusion, and Devin Carter is out with an illness.

  2. Toronto at Milwaukee, 8:00 p.m. ET
  3. Boston at Milwaukee, 8:00 p.m. ET
  4. Milwaukee at New York, 7:30 p.m. ET

Two of the next three games are at Fiserv Forum, and the Bucks have lost the second quarter in four of their seven games. A better stretch before halftime is the obvious place to start.

Records, scores, quarter scores and team totals come from the official box scores through Monday, Nov. 2. League rankings are as of Tuesday, Nov. 3. The 1-6 history comes from a review of 360 team-seasons from 2014-15 through 2025-26. Boston’s injury report is from Tuesday afternoon.
