October 4 update: In an opening statement shared Sunday by Omari Sankofa II, Duren reaffirmed his commitment to Detroit and expressed his happiness at returning. His personal response follows Saturday’s announcement that the extension was signed; the financial terms remain separately attributed to the earlier report.

Updated October 3, 2026: The Detroit Pistons announced Saturday that Jalen Duren has signed a contract extension. The team did not disclose its terms.

Shams Charania reported Thursday night, October 1, that Duren had agreed to a five-year, $200 million deal, citing his agent, Chafie Fields, and describing it as fully guaranteed. Those financial terms remain attributed to Charania’s report; Detroit’s Saturday announcement confirms the signing.

In a follow-up, Charania said the $200 million proposal had been available for two weeks before Duren accepted it. The reported change Thursday was Duren’s acceptance of that existing offer, rather than Detroit raising its price again.

How to read the reported value

The $200 million total works out to an average of $40 million per season over five years. That arithmetic is not a year-by-year salary schedule; the report does not establish how the money is distributed across the contract.

Coming off an All-Star season

Duren averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in 2025-26, earning his first All-Star selection.

When will Duren return to the court?

October 7 update: Duren sat out Detroit’s October 5 preseason opener. Omari Sankofa II reported that he had been observed shooting at the practice facility that day. On October 7, J.B. Bickerstaff said the plan was for Duren to play during preseason, while monitoring his workload and how he felt. No debut date was confirmed.

October 2 update: J.B. Bickerstaff said Duren was in good shape but Detroit still needed to determine his ramp-up before he took the floor, according to Eric Woodyard’s Friday report. “We’ll take our time figuring it out and we will go from there,” Bickerstaff said.

Duren underwent a physical and other testing on Friday and was expected to begin practicing as early as the weekend, Dana Gauruder reported October 2. That was a tentative practice timeline, not confirmation of a completed practice or game clearance.

In separate Friday remarks shared by Omari Sankofa II, Bickerstaff welcomed Duren back and said the team had expected him to return. Those comments established the coach’s plan to reintegrate him; they did not confirm a completed practice, a preseason debut or unrestricted playing time.

For fans tracking his return, there are three separate milestones: the completed contract signing, his participation in team work, and a game-availability decision. The first should not be used as a substitute for the other two. Neither Friday update supplied a firm date for his first appearance.

Which Pistons games come next?

Detroit’s next preseason game is at Washington on October 10 at 7 p.m. ET. Its regular-season opener is against Boston on October 20 at 3 p.m. ET.

That leaves time for a gradual return, but neither scheduled game should be treated as a confirmed Duren appearance. The next useful update will be a specific participation or availability announcement, rather than another restatement of the contract’s value.
