The red Chicago Bulls road uniform from Michael Jordan’s second game of the 1998 NBA Finals has changed hands for $14 million, Hunt Auctions announced on Monday, October 12, calling it the most money ever paid for a piece of basketball memorabilia.
The buyer is Ron Firman, a real estate investor based in Miami, according to the Pennsylvania auction house. The jersey, which Jordan later signed, did not go under the hammer: Hunt brokered it as a private treaty sale, and the seller has not been identified.
The figure tops the roughly $12.3 million fetched last month for the white jersey Jordan wore in Game 3 of the same series, and it pushes the price of his 1998 Finals uniforms higher for the third time in four years. Firman, in a release, described himself as thrilled with the buy.
Game 2 was played on June 5, 1998, in Salt Lake City. Chicago had dropped the opener to the Utah Jazz, and Jordan answered with 37 points as the Bulls won on the road to level the series at a game apiece. Chicago closed out the title in six games, the sixth championship of Jordan’s career and the franchise’s sixth in eight seasons. That 1997-98 campaign later became the subject of the 10-part documentary The Last Dance, released in 2020.
Its trail is short. Hunt said the original buyer got it straight from the Bulls in 2003, and only one more owner held it before Firman.
Items from that final Bulls run keep resetting the ceiling:
Among game-worn jerseys from any sport, only one known sale is bigger: Babe Ruth’s shirt from his called-shot game in the 1932 World Series, which sold for $24.12 million two years ago.
David Hunt, the president of Hunt Auctions, argued that Jordan’s game-used gear now trades like fine art, saying it had reached “an elite asset class more typically reserved for iconic works of art.” The auction house reported the terms; there has been no independent confirmation of the price.
The Bulls, who handled the jersey’s first sale more than two decades ago, are not party to this deal. Jordan’s former club opens its regular season later this month; follow its schedule and results on the Bulls team page.
