Julian Strawther is trying to make his game simpler as Denver looks for more production from its second unit. In Vinny Benedetto’s October 10 Denver Gazette report, the Nuggets guard described the work he has been doing on screening, shot creation and defense before his fourth NBA season.

“Obviously, I can be a chaotic player,” Strawther said after Friday’s practice. “I’m trying to be more simple.”

Learning from Tim Hardaway Jr.

Benedetto reported that Tim Hardaway Jr.’s move to Miami created an opening in Denver’s bench rotation. Strawther said finding ways to replace the veteran’s production had been a recurring message during the summer.

Coach David Adelman pointed to screening as one part of that work. He said Strawther was learning when to set or slip a screen and how the player handling the ball changes what comes next. The aim is to create easier shots, rather than rely only on difficult attempts.

Defense remains the test

Strawther told Benedetto that added strength had made him more comfortable fighting through screens and playing physically on the ball. He also acknowledged that there was still work to do.

“I’m just trying to test my limits on that side of the ball, because I understand that’s ultimately my swing skill,” he said.

Those comments describe Strawther’s preparation and the opportunity in front of him. They do not establish a guaranteed rotation spot. Denver is still using preseason games to test how its starters and reserves fit together.

Our Nuggets-Bulls recap covers Sunday’s result and Aaron Gordon’s preparation routine.
