The 76ers’ center depth behind Joel Embiid was a concern going into the season, especially after Ariel Hukporti tore his Achilles in his preseason debut. On opening night, LeBron James, long reluctant to play much center, spent time at the five in Philadelphia’s win over the Knicks, Brian Windhorst writes.

It was Embiid’s idea, according to Dave McMenamin. Embiid picked up his third foul late in the first half and suggested James close out the second quarter in the middle. “I just felt like the way they were calling fouls, I wasn’t going to be as aggressive as I should be on defense, having three fouls, wanting to stay on the floor,” Embiid said. “I just told them I thought we should do that.”

Coach Nick Nurse said the team was willing to experiment with James’ role whether or not Embiid was on the floor. When the two shared the court, James often defended Karl-Anthony Towns and Embiid took Josh Hart. “[We discussed putting] a four-man on KAT, because there’s so many pick-and-rolls with him and [Jalen] Brunson that gives you some versatility to play some other coverages,” Nurse said. “Over the long haul, it was very good for us.”

Embiid, healthy to start the season, had three blocks and said he wants to be an elite defensive anchor again, according to Kris Rhim. “I think this year’s going to be back to All-Defensive team like in the past,” he said. “Felt like I was all over the place, so I need to do that every game.”

Tyrese Maxey set the tone with 16 first-half points, which Embiid said kept Philadelphia afloat while other players struggled to make shots. He finished with a team-high 28 points and matched Embiid’s three blocks, Gina Mizell writes.
