NBA two-way contracts: salary, game limits and the playoff cutoff

A two-way contract lets a player provide services to both an NBA team and an NBA G League team. The useful details are in the limits: three roster spots, a 50-game Active List ceiling, prorated pay and a required change of contract before postseason play.

How much does an NBA two-way contract pay?

The full-season amount is 50% of the applicable NBA minimum annual salary for a player with zero years of service. A two-way player with more experience does not use a higher veteran minimum in this formula. If the contract is signed during the regular season, multiply that amount by the proportion of regular-season calendar days remaining, including the signing day. Article II §11(a)(i)–(ii), printed page 50.

Formula: two-way salary = zero-year minimum annual salary × 50% × remaining regular-season days ÷ total regular-season days. For a full-season deal, the final fraction is 1. The minimum scale changes with the salary-cap year, so a dollar figure from an earlier season should not be presented as the current rate. Article I §1(jj), printed page 5; Article II §6(a).

The number of NBA appearances is not the basis of this salary calculation. Do not calculate a player’s salary as games played divided by 50. The CBA also prohibits bonuses, incentive compensation, deferred compensation and loans in a two-way contract. Article II §11(a)(iii), printed page 51.

Salary is different from guaranteed money

The full-season salary formula does not mean every dollar is protected if a player is waived. The agreement has separate limits and timing rules for compensation protection. The signing date and the contract’s protection provisions matter; a published salary alone does not establish a player’s guaranteed payout. Article II §11(c), printed page 53.

While the contract remains two-way, its salary is excluded from Team Salary. A team does not need cap room or a salary-cap exception to sign, acquire or convert a player to a two-way contract. A later standard NBA contract is a different cap transaction. See our salary-cap and apron guide. Article VII §4(j), printed page 225.

The 50-game limit counts Active List games

A team may carry at most three two-way players. A player on a full-season two-way contract may be on the NBA team’s Active List for at most 50 regular-season games. The rule does not say “50 box-score appearances.” A player who is active but records a DNP still uses an Active List game; an Inactive List game is not an Active List game. Article II §11(b)(i)–(ii), printed page 52.

For a signing after the regular season begins, the limit is 50 × remaining season days ÷ total season days, rounded to the nearest whole game, with a minimum of one. The day of signing is included. The calendar-day fraction is the same one used for salary, but the game allowance is rounded; the salary fraction is not a count of permitted games.

The separate 90-game allowance when a team has fewer than 15 standard contracts

The CBA calls a regular-season game an Under-Fifteen Game when the team has fewer than 15 players signed to standard NBA contracts. Across those games, the team can use at most 90 two-way Active List slots in total. One active two-way player uses one slot; two use two; three use three. This is a shared team allowance, not 90 games for each player. Article II §11(b)(iii), printed pages 52–53.

Worked example: if all three two-way players are active for 30 games while the club has fewer than 15 standard contracts, that uses all 90 slots. Each player has used only 30 of an individual full-season 50-game limit, but that does not create more under-fifteen slots for the team. Games with 15 standard contracts do not consume this particular shared allowance; the individual limit still applies.

Who can sign, and for how long?

  • Contract length: no more than two seasons, with no option year or early termination option.
  • Signing deadline: no team may sign a two-way contract after March 4 of the season.
  • Service time: a player generally cannot have, or reach, four years of service during the contract. A player with three years therefore cannot sign a two-year two-way deal.
  • Same-team limit: the contract cannot put the player on two-way deals with the same NBA team for any part of more than three salary-cap years.

The service-time rule has a narrow exception: a player with four years may receive a one-season two-way deal if at least one credited service year came from a season in which the player stayed on an NBA roster for the entire regular season and did not play in a regular-season, Play-In or playoff game. A simple “years in the league” count cannot establish this exception. Article II §11(d)–(e), printed page 54.

Can two-way players play in the Play-In or playoffs?

Not while they remain on a two-way contract. The CBA definition of postseason includes both the Play-In and playoffs. A two-way player may travel and practice with the team and stay on its Inactive List during that period, but cannot be on its postseason roster or play in postseason games. Article XXIX §2(e) and §3(b), printed page 430.

To become eligible for the postseason roster, the player must sign a standard NBA contract or have the two-way contract converted before the start of the team’s last regular-season game. The separate waiver deadline still applies. A request for waivers after 11:59 p.m. Eastern on March 1 generally bars postseason participation, with the cited exception for acquisition by a team reduced to eight active players through injury or illness. Signing, conversion and waiver deadlines answer different questions. Article XXIX §3(b)–§4, printed pages 430–431.

Conversion is not one single contract outcome

Every two-way contract gives the team an option to convert it to a standard NBA contract at the player’s applicable minimum salary for the remainder of the original term. That option runs from July 1 until just before the team’s last regular-season game. The team and player can also negotiate a standard NBA contract under the CBA’s other requirements. A report that a player “converted” should identify the actual contract terms rather than assume a new multiyear deal. Article II §11(f)–(g), printed pages 54–56.

Exhibit 10 is a different starting point

For the affiliate bonus and the separate retention, waiver and conversion paths, read our Exhibit 10 contract and bonus guide.

A contract with Exhibit 10 gives the team an option to convert it to a two-way contract before the first day of the NBA regular season, subject to the agreement’s eligibility restrictions. Exercising that option rescinds the Exhibit 10 bonus right and activates the specified conversion protection. It is not the same as converting an existing two-way deal into a standard contract. Article II §11(h), printed pages 56–58.

Quick answers

What is an NBA two-way contract?
It is an NBA player contract for services to both the NBA team and an NBA G League team. A team can carry at most three two-way players. It is different from a standard NBA contract with a G League assignment.
How much does a two-way player earn?
About $679,000 for a full season in 2026-27, estimated from the CBA formula and the official salary cap, rounded to the nearest $1,000. This is a WHYNBA calculation, not a league-announced salary or a guaranteed payout. The full-season two-way salary is 50% of the applicable zero-years-of-service NBA minimum annual salary, regardless of the player’s own service time. A contract signed during the regular season is prorated by calendar days remaining, including the signing day. NBA appearances do not determine that salary formula.
Does a DNP count toward the 50-game limit?
Yes, if the player was on the NBA Active List for that regular-season game. The CBA limits Active List games, not only games in which the player logs minutes. A late signing also has a prorated limit.
Can two-way players play in the Play-In or playoffs?
Not while they remain on a two-way contract. The CBA postseason definition includes both. A player must sign a standard NBA contract or have the two-way contract converted before the start of the team’s last regular-season game, and satisfy the separate postseason waiver rule.
What is the two-way signing deadline?
The cited CBA prohibits signing a two-way contract after March 4. This is distinct from the standard-contract conversion deadline and the March 1 postseason waiver deadline.
Is a two-way contract fully guaranteed?
The salary formula is not a full guarantee. The CBA separately regulates compensation protection, and the protected amount can depend on contract terms and timing. A headline full-season salary is not proof of what a waived player will receive.
