The Philadelphia 76ers trailed the Cleveland Cavaliers by 29 points late in the first half and still won their home opener 114-106 at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Thursday, October 22. Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points, Joel Embiid had 24 and Jaylen Brown 21, and Philadelphia outscored Cleveland 69-37 after halftime in front of 21,423 fans.

The NBA noted it was the largest comeback in 76ers history and the 10th-largest in the league in the play-by-play era. Philadelphia did not lead until Embiid’s 16-foot jumper made it 96-95 with 6:54 left, the only lead change of the night, and a 15-0 run that started with Embiid’s three-point play put the game away. Donovan Mitchell scored 32 points with 10 rebounds for Cleveland, 22 of them in the first half, but the Cavaliers managed 16 points in the fourth quarter.

How it turned

Cleveland broke an 11-11 tie with a 28-7 run that stretched into the second quarter. VJ Edgecombe scored and Embiid hit a 24-footer with 0.7 seconds left to cut it to 69-45 at halftime.

The 76ers scored the first 11 points of the third quarter. Brown hit a three, and Edgecombe and LeBron James each finished three-point plays before an Embiid layup made it 69-56. Harden’s 25-foot pull-up three made it 95-89 with 8:37 left, and Cleveland did not score again for almost five minutes. Embiid scored seven straight points on a turnaround three-point play, a floater and a 16-footer, Brown followed with a fadeaway, a driving layup and a pull-up jumper, and Maxey’s basket made it 104-95 with 4:06 to play.
