Stephen Curry after the Warriors blow a 12-point lead in the last 3:47: ‘You might lose a little sleep over tonight’

Stephen Curry has lost plenty of games in his career. He said Friday’s was a different kind. The Golden State Warriors led the Memphis Grizzlies 106-94 after a De’Anthony Melton three with 3:47 left in their home opener, then did not score another field goal. Memphis closed on a 17-0 run and won 111-108, and Golden State fell to 0-2.

“There’s losses and there’s ways that you lose like tonight that kind of sting a little bit more,” Curry said. “Everybody says there’s another game tomorrow. But the idea of how important every game is for us to build the right habits, the right execution, mentality to try to win, and the fact that you gave one away like this. You might lose a little sleep over tonight.”

Curry’s postgame answer, filmed by Anthony Slater on X.

‘Pretty much everything went wrong’

Curry finished with 24 points but shot 5-of-15 and 3-of-10 from three, making all 11 of his free throws. He missed all four of his shots in the final 2:46, including a 28-foot three that Zach Edey blocked with 1:10 left and a step-back three with 35.9 seconds to go that would have broken a 106-106 tie.

“A couple of tough calls, a couple of tough offensive rebounds,” Curry said of the finish. “Pretty much everything went wrong. It’s a tough pill to swallow, considering we played really solid, especially in the second half, to give ourselves a lead and be in control of the game for as long as we did.”

Golden State missed nine straight shots and turned it over twice during the run. Cameron Boozer‘s turnaround jumper with 20.1 seconds left put Memphis ahead for good, and on the next possession Draymond Green was called for an offensive foul and a technical. The rookie finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists and went 9-of-9 at the line.

Curry on Ty Jerome’s ‘full green light’

Curry was also asked about Ty Jerome, his former teammate, who followed his 45-point opener with a game-high 28 points and the three with 1:24 left that cut Golden State’s lead to 106-105. That gives Jerome 73 points in two games, and Curry was asked about him as the league’s early scoring leader.

“I know he’s happy to be healthy, and he’s obviously gotten a lot better since he was here,” Curry said. “He was a great player when he was here, but he’s got a full green light over there to kind of do whatever he wants and run their system and initiate a lot of their scoring. So he’s a tough cover.” Memphis, he said, is “trying to rebuild and figure out who they are, and he’s doing a great job.”

Jerome credits Jerami Grant and the stops

Jerome, for his part, wanted to talk about defense. Memphis got nine straight stops to finish the game, and he singled out Jerami Grant, who went 2-of-9 but kept defending. “I got to shout out Jerami Grant, what he did at the end of the game,” Jerome said. “Someone who averaged 20 for some years, comes to a team, might not get the ball as much as he wants. Instead, he picks up full court, gets a stop. That’s unbelievable, the attitude to be able to do that.”

He also praised Jaylen Wells‘s defense on the Warriors’ ball screens and said the Grizzlies still have to study why Golden State’s runs happened: “We got a little stagnant offensively.” Asked about the team’s no-backing-down attitude, he said: “Win, lose or draw, we ain’t doing that.”

The Warriors play at the Phoenix Suns on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, which is 5 a.m. Sunday in Cairo, the first stop of a three-game trip that continues in Denver and Minnesota. Memphis is 2-0.
