SAN ANTONIO — Oct. 21, 2026 — Victor Wembanyama went 1-for-13 from the field in the Spurs’ 116-104 opening-night loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. That is 7.7%, the lowest field-goal percentage of his NBA career, regular season and playoffs included.

He still finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks in 34 minutes, because 10 of those points came at the free-throw line. The night stands out even more against his record: in 203 previous NBA games, he had never made fewer than three field goals when he took more than five shots.

The box score line

  • Field goals: 1-for-13 (7.7%), including 0-for-4 from three
  • Free throws: 10-for-12. Ten of his 12 points (83%) came at the line
  • Rebounds: 13 (11 defensive). Blocks: 6. Assists: 3. Turnovers: 4
  • Plus-minus: -2 in 34 minutes, in a game the Spurs lost by 12
  • Two of his 12 misses were blocked: Chet Holmgren stopped a short pull-up in the second quarter, and rookie Aday Mara rejected an alley-oop dunk in the third

His only basket came with no time left in the third quarter, an alley-oop dunk from De’Aaron Fox that cut Oklahoma City’s lead to 93-80. By then, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander already had 28 of his 32 points. Wembanyama played about seven more minutes in the fourth quarter and did not attempt another shot.

A new career low

Basketball-Reference’s game logs cover 203 NBA games for Wembanyama before Tuesday: 181 in the regular season and 22 in the 2026 playoffs. His previous worst shooting game was 1-for-5 at Oklahoma City on Oct. 30, 2024. His previous low with at least 10 attempts was 3-for-13 against Dallas on March 19, 2024.

The table shows his lowest field-goal percentages in games with at least five attempts. Four of the nine came against Oklahoma City, including Game 5 of last spring’s Western Conference finals. The free-throw share is a career high as well. His previous peak was 67% (4 of 6 points) in that 2024 loss in Oklahoma City.

Why it is an outlier

Wembanyama entered the season as a 48.4% career shooter in the regular season (1,512-for-3,123) and 48.5% in the playoffs. Oklahoma City had not been able to hold him down before either. In 16 previous meetings, he shot 47.8% against the Thunder, and in the seven-game West final he averaged 27.3 points on 48.1% shooting, including 41 points in the double-overtime Game 1.

The rest of his game held up. The six blocks were the 31st time in his career, playoffs included, that he reached that number. He also led the Spurs in rebounds. The Spurs’ other players combined to shoot 35-for-80 (43.8%). Stephon Castle scored 24 and Dylan Harper added 18, but as a team San Antonio finished at 38.7% and 10-for-37 from three.

“I thought Chet did a great job on him,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. Holmgren finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Mara, playing 12 minutes in his regular-season debut, had seven points and the dunk rejection. After the game, Wembanyama said he did not feel like himself on offense: “I need to go back to playing the basketball I like.”

Opening-night leaders after three games

Tuesday’s three games make up the first page of the 2026-27 leaderboard. Wembanyama’s six blocks lead the league, and his 13 rebounds trail only one player:

Wembanyama was not the only star with a cold start. Tatum went 6-for-23 and 0-for-7 from three in Boston’s loss at Detroit, though he had 11 assists. Embiid shot 4-for-15 in Philadelphia’s win at New York. The Spurs host Houston on Friday, and Wembanyama’s rate will move quickly: one normal game, about 10-for-20, would bring him to 33%.
