Scoot Henderson’s extension deadline: why the Blazers can afford to wait until July

Portland has until 6 p.m. ET Monday to extend Scoot Henderson. A deal near Bobby Marks' projected $16 million start would not touch this season's payroll, and restricted free agency still gives the Blazers the final say next summer.

The Trail Blazers have until 6 p.m. ET on Monday, October 19 to sign Scoot Henderson to a rookie-scale extension, and the money makes waiting the easy choice. An extension would not change this season’s books at all. It would only lock in a 2027-28 number that Portland can otherwise set next summer, when it holds the right to match any offer Henderson gets.

Henderson, the third pick in the 2023 draft, is in the last season of a four-year, $44.3 million rookie deal and earns $13,585,523 in 2026-27, according to public cap sheets. Reports said early this month that a deal before the opener is unlikely. General manager Joe Cronin has called Henderson a “high priority” and described the interest as mutual.

What a deal would cost

a put a fair extension at three years and $51.8 million, starting at $16 million. He compared that first-year figure to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, the amount almost any team could offer him in free agency. That is a reported projection, not an offer.

Marks also laid out why Portland might hesitate. Henderson has made 40.4 percent of his shots for his career, the second-worst mark of any player across the past three seasons, and opponents shot 51.4 percent last season when he was the closest defender. The case for paying him is his playoff run, including 70 points over the first three games of the series against San Antonio.

Where the payroll stands

The Trail Blazers carry $191.83 million for 14 players this season, or $192.09 million counting dead money, according to the public trackers JJNBA and Capsheets. That leaves them $8.33 million under the $200.428 million tax line the league set for 2026-27 and $16.92 million under the first apron. Next season is where Henderson’s number lands:

Player 2026-27 2027-28
Ja Morant $42.17M $44.89M
Jrue Holiday $34.80M $37.20M
Shaedon Sharpe $20.09M $21.70M
Toumani Camara $18.08M $19.53M
Robert Williams III $14.00M $14.50M
Damian Lillard $13.40M $14.10M
Scoot Henderson $13.59M Restricted free agent, or extension
Team total listed $191.83M (14 players) $181.21M (10 players)

The figures come from JJNBA’s sheet as updated on October 18. Adding Marks’ projected $16 million first year would put Portland at about $197.2 million for 11 players in 2027-28, before filling the rest of the roster. Next season’s tax and apron lines have not been set yet, because they move with the cap.

Why the deadline favors Portland

If no deal is signed by Monday, Henderson plays this season at his current salary and becomes a restricted free agent next July. JJNBA lists his cap hold for that summer at $40.8 million, which matters only if the Blazers want to use cap room first. Portland projects to be over next year’s cap either way, so the hold costs them little.

Restricted free agency gives the Blazers the last word. Another team can sign Henderson to an offer sheet, and Portland can match it. The risk for the team is price: a strong season in a crowded backcourt with Morant, Lillard and Holiday could push his market well past $16 million. The risk for Henderson is the reverse, playing a contract year off the bench, which is where Siegel expects him to start.

What comes next

The extension window closes Monday at 6 p.m. ET. Portland opens the season on Wednesday, October 21 against the Suns at Moda Center; follow it in the Game Center. Every Blazers contract is on the team’s salary page.
