MIAMI — Oct. 14, 2026 — Early in the second half against Brooklyn, Davion Mitchell was bleeding from a cut above his right eye after a foul on a drive. He went to the locker room, came back long enough to knock down the free throws, then exited again for treatment. Anthony Chiang reported six stitches closed the cut — and Mitchell was expected to return.

He did. The Heat posted the proof: Mitchell catching fire from three with the bandage work already done, captioned simply that six stitches did not matter. Miami closed a 144-128 preseason win at Kaseya Center with its starting point guard still on the floor.

The sequence

Ira Winderman noted Mitchell headed to the locker room with the eye cut 26 seconds into the second half, with Ryan Conwell checking in. Chiang tracked the next steps: Mitchell returned to shoot the two free throws, absorbed another foul, then left again so the cut could be closed. Roughly 15 minutes of real time later, both Chiang and Winderman had the same update — six stitches above the right eye, and Mitchell was back in the game.

What the box score shows

Mitchell finished with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 1-of-3 from three and 4-of-4 from the line, plus two rebounds, four assists and two steals in 24 minutes as a starter. He played through the same window as Giannis Antetokounmpo, who went 20 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists in 24 minutes in his first extended Heat look of the preseason.

Bam Adebayo (groin), Pelle Larsson (illness) and Dru Smith (calf) were already out, so Miami needed its remaining starters to hold the middle of the game. Mitchell’s stitches episode could have flipped that plan. Instead he returned, knocked down the three the Heat clipped, and stayed in the rotation through a blowout that never fully settled until late.

Why it matters

Mitchell is the Heat’s starting point guard heading into the regular season, and toughness stories in October usually stay buried in beat notes. This one came with a team video and a clean line. Opening night is still a week away; the takeaway from Wednesday is simpler — a cut that needed six stitches did not end his night.
