Dwyane Wade says he would’ve won 2011 Finals MVP — and the Heat needed that loss

On Off Script with Jaren Jackson Jr., Wade said he would’ve taken 2011 Finals MVP if Miami beat Dallas — and that the Heat’s cocky start made the Mavericks’ punch the wake-up they needed.

MIAMI — Oct. 14, 2026 — Dwyane Wade still thinks he would have taken Finals MVP if Miami had beaten Dallas in 2011. On Off Script with Jaren Jackson Jr., he also said the Heat’s loss was the wake-up they needed — because early in that series, they got cocky.

“We needed that loss”

Heat Central circulated the clip Wednesday. Wade told Jackson the Mavericks read Miami’s swagger after the Big Three’s first Finals run and never let the Heat recover once the series turned.

“We were cocky. Dallas saw that, felt that, and punched us in the mouth. When they punched us, we couldn’t get back up. We needed that loss,” Wade said in the stretch Heat Central highlighted.

Even keel

In the fuller Off Script exchange, Wade walked Jackson through Game 2’s collapse — Miami blowing a big home lead — and how the Heat stayed “wobbly” even after winning Game 3 to go back up in the series.

“We got whooped on pretty good. We were like, ‘Yeah, we’re a little cocky. Nobody can mess with us,’” Wade said. “You got to stay even keel. You can’t go with the roller coaster. And so I didn’t want to do it, but we needed that loss.”

Dallas closed the series in six. Dirk Nowitzki took Finals MVP. Miami answered with titles in 2012 and 2013 — the run Wade now frames as proof that the 2011 punch was necessary.
