Erik Spoelstra’s 117-116 overtime win at the Clippers was his 833rd regular-season victory, moving him past Cotton Fitzsimmons into sole possession of 16th place on the NBA’s all-time coaching wins list.

Erik Spoelstra’s overtime win at the Clippers on Wednesday was more than a 20-point comeback and a Klay Thompson game-winner. It was also his 833rd regular-season victory as an NBA head coach, moving him alone into 16th place on the all-time wins list past Cotton Fitzsimmons. The Miami Heat marked it on Thursday with a simple graphic: “833 regular season wins and counting.” Jack Ramsay sits next at 864.
Before tip-off Wednesday, Spoelstra and Fitzsimmons were tied at 832 wins, sharing 16th. The Heat’s 117-116 overtime win at Intuit Dome made Spoelstra the sole coach at that spot. Gregg Popovich still owns the all-time lead at 1,390. Active coaches above Spoelstra include Doc Rivers and Rick Carlisle. Spoelstra’s regular-season mark sits at 833-616, a .575 winning percentage, with six Eastern Conference titles and two championships already on the résumé.
Miami trailed Los Angeles by 20 in the first half and by 10 with about four and a half minutes left in regulation. Bam Adebayo finished with season highs of 35 points and 10 rebounds. Giannis Antetokounmpo added 27 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Thompson hit the winning three with one second left in overtime. Our game story has the full comeback, and Spoelstra had spent that morning with Dwyane Wade at shootaround — a visit he called invaluable for a team that started 2-5.
Spoelstra has never made a fuss about personal milestones. When he crossed 800 wins last season, players had to tell him it had happened. He changed the subject to his staff. The 833rd win lands in a different chapter: a Heat roster rebuilt around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, with Thompson added to space the floor, and a 3-5 start that still has Spoelstra talking about adjustments he will not wait to make.
Miami finishes the back-to-back at Golden State later Thursday night, tipping at 10 p.m. ET — 5 a.m. Friday in Cairo — on NBA TV. A win there would be Spoelstra’s 834th. Ramsay’s 864 is 31 away. The list above him is short, and the work in front of this particular Miami team is still long.
