Cooper Flagg will be “evaluated the next couple days” after leaving Friday’s 121-105 win in Indiana with left shoulder soreness, Marc Stein reports, a timeline that puts Saturday’s home opener against San Antonio in doubt. Flagg was fouled hard by Aaron Nesmith on a fast break late in the second quarter. Nesmith received a flagrant foul 1, and he and Naji Marshall drew technicals after Marshall came to his teammate’s defense, Mike Curtis tweets. Flagg made both free throws before subbing out and was ruled out after 14 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and a block in 17 minutes. “Nesmith’s a great guy. Heck of a player. I’ve known him since he was in high school. An unfortunate play,” Mavericks coach Dusty May said. “Hopefully Coop’s fine, but obviously it’s something we wish wouldn’t have happened.”
More injury updates from Friday, relayed by Rory Maher:
Paolo Banchero experienced right ankle soreness in the Magic’s 115-93 home loss to Minnesota and was deemed doubtful to return before sitting out the fourth quarter with the game out of reach. Coach Sean Sweeney confirmed only that the ankle was sore and that Banchero will continue to be evaluated, Jason Beede tweets. Orlando is 0-2.
Jalen Duren suffered a right thigh injury in the Pistons’ 126-106 win in Miami and was questionable to return. He did not check back in, and Paul Reed started the third quarter, Omari Sankofa II notes. Reed finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Oso Ighodaro will miss Saturday’s game with a strained right oblique suffered late in the second quarter of Wednesday’s loss in Portland, Duane Rankin reports. “Pretty good report overall. It’s an oblique strain. He’ll be out for sure tomorrow,” Suns coach Jordan Ott said. “We hope it’s just more day-to-day than long-term.” Ighodaro, who recently signed a three-year, $29 million extension, played all 82 games last season.
