BOSTON — Oct. 15, 2026 — Jaylen Brown took 1,543 shots for the Boston Celtics in 2025-26. He made 736 of them, missed 807, launched 1,139 twos and turned the ball over 259 times. On Basketball-Reference’s season leaders board, that package made him first in field-goal attempts, field goals made, two-point attempts and turnovers — and second only to Luka Dončić in usage rate at 36.2 percent.

The volume is the story. Brown started all 71 games he played, logged 2,443 minutes and averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 34.4 minutes a night. He finished sixth in MVP voting, made the All-Star team and landed on All-NBA Second Team. The shot diet that produced those honors also produced the heaviest single-season load of any Celtic on the 2025-26 leaderboards.

Four volume titles, one second place

No other player matched Brown’s combination of attempt volume and made baskets. Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey was next in field-goal attempts at 1,501, with New York’s Jalen Brunson at 1,475 and Dončić at 1,457. On makes, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sat second at 731 — five behind Brown — and Houston’s Kevin Durant third at 716.

Inside the arc the gap was wider. Brown’s 1,139 two-point attempts led Gilgeous-Alexander (1,023) by more than 100. He converted 596 of those twos (.523). From three he was more selective: 140 of 404 (.347), only 26.2 percent of his field-goal attempts coming from beyond the arc.

  • Field-goal attempts, 2025-26: Brown 1,543, Maxey 1,501, Brunson 1,475, Dončić 1,457, Donovan Mitchell 1,403
  • Field goals made: Brown 736, Gilgeous-Alexander 731, Durant 716, Maxey 694, Dončić 693
  • Two-point attempts: Brown 1,139, Gilgeous-Alexander 1,023, Alperen Şengün 992, Cooper Flagg 950, Brunson 947
  • Field goals missed: Brown and Maxey tied at 807; Brunson 786, Dončić 764
  • Turnovers: Brown 259, Dončić 255, Deni Avdija 253, Durant 246, James Harden 245
  • Usage rate: Dončić 38.1, Brown 36.2, Kawhi Leonard 33.5, Gilgeous-Alexander 33.4

The turnover total is the other side of the same coin. Brown’s 259 giveaways led the league by four over Dončić. At 3.6 per game and a 12.7 turnover percentage, the rate was ordinary for a high-usage wing; the raw count simply tracks how often Boston put the ball in his hands.

What the full line looks like

Brown’s shooting split was .477 from the field, .347 from three and .795 at the line on 536 free-throw attempts — fifth in the league behind Dončić’s 645. True shooting landed at .573. His player efficiency rating was 22.0, with 6.9 win shares (3.5 offensive, 3.4 defensive), a 3.3 box plus-minus and 3.3 VORP on Basketball-Reference’s advanced table.

  • 2025-26 line: 71 games, 71 starts, 34.4 minutes, 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.0 steals, 3.6 turnovers
  • Shooting: 736 of 1,543 (.477), 140 of 404 from three (.347), 426 of 536 free throws (.795)
  • Per 36 minutes: 30.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 3.8 turnovers on 22.7 field-goal attempts
  • Advanced: 36.2 usage, 22.0 PER, .573 true shooting, 12.7 turnover percentage, 6.9 win shares, 3.3 BPM / 3.3 VORP
  • Awards: All-Star, All-NBA Second Team, sixth in MVP voting

Scaled to 36 minutes he was a 30-point, 7-rebound, 5-assist creator who still needed almost 23 shots a night. That is the profile Boston carried when Jayson Tatum’s availability forced more of the offense onto Brown’s plate — and the profile the leaders board recorded in full.

Distinct from the usage-rate crown

Dončić’s separate usage-rate and free-throw-attempt titles sit one rung above Brown on the possession board. Brown’s 36.2 usage was the second-highest mark of any 2025-26 player, but the attempt and make titles belong to him alone. The Celtics asked him to finish possessions; the league’s counting stats say he finished more of them than anyone else.

Why the volume matters for 2026-27

A wing who leads the NBA in shots taken, shots made, twos attempted and turnovers is already the center of a team’s offense. Whether Boston can keep that volume efficient — or spread it without losing the made-basket lead — is the open question heading into the new season. The 2025-26 tape is unambiguous: when the Celtics needed a shot, Brown took it.
