The Spurs turned a 92-91 game into a 23-point lead with a 27-5 fourth-quarter run and beat the Mavericks 122-106 in Dallas' home opener. Victor Wembanyama had 23 points and 4 blocks, rookie Dylan Harper 22.

The San Antonio Spurs broke open a one-point game with a 27-5 run in the fourth quarter and beat the Dallas Mavericks 122-106 in Dallas’ home opener at American Airlines Center on Saturday, October 24. Victor Wembanyama had 23 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks with a game-best plus-32, rookie Dylan Harper scored 22, and De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle had 19 each.
It was San Antonio’s first win after losses to Oklahoma City and, on Friday night in Austin, to Houston, so both teams are now 1-2. Dallas played without Kyrie Irving, who sat for left knee management, and Cooper Flagg, who has a mild left shoulder sprain.

The first half swung back and forth, with 14 lead changes in the game. Dallas led by as many as six in the second quarter, 51-45, before Wembanyama, Castle, Fox and Keldon Johnson scored on a 14-3 run. Harper finished a three-point play with 3.2 seconds left in the half, and San Antonio led 68-60 at the break, then pushed it to 77-63 early in the third.
The Mavericks came back behind their bench. Sergio de Larrea and Marcus Sasser hit pull-up jumpers, Sasser made a three, and a 17-4 run gave Dallas an 85-84 lead with 2:01 left in the third. Castle’s 26-foot three put the Spurs back in front, and they led 92-89 going into the fourth.
Daniel Gafford’s layup cut it to 92-91 with 11:32 left, and then San Antonio took over. Devin Vassell hit a three and assisted on the next three baskets: an alley-oop for rookie Tarris Reed Jr.’s first NBA basket and threes by Julian Champagnie and Harper. Champagnie and Harper each hit another three, Wembanyama finished an alley-oop from Fox for a three-point play, and Harper’s running dunk off a Wembanyama pass made it 119-96 with 3:13 left. Dallas scored 17 points in the quarter.
The Spurs had 34 assists on 48 baskets, made 15 threes and scored 64 points in the paint. They forced 21 turnovers and scored 26 points off them. Fox had 9 assists and 3 steals, Castle 8 assists, and Vassell 11 points and 6 assists. Champagnie scored 12 off the bench, eight of them in the fourth on two threes and a dunk, and blocked three shots. Wembanyama shot 9-of-18.
De Larrea led the Mavericks with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting off the bench. Gafford, P.J. Washington and Sasser had 12 each, Zaccharie Risacher 11 and Naji Marshall 10. Dallas shot 51 percent and scored 28 fast-break points, but it went 5-of-8 at the free-throw line and had only 11 threes to San Antonio’s 15.
The Mavericks visit the Miami Heat on Monday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m. ET (2:30 a.m. Tuesday Cairo time). The Spurs are off until Tuesday, October 27, when they host the Sacramento Kings at 8 p.m. ET (3 a.m. Wednesday Cairo time).
