The San Antonio Spurs expect to have Victor Wembanyama back for Wednesday night’s preseason home game against the Phoenix Suns, along with fellow starters Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell. De’Aaron Fox and Carter Bryant are still listed as questionable, and Tobias Harris remains out with a left calf strain.

All four starters sat out Monday’s 119-109 loss at Utah. Coach Mitch Johnson said that was planned rest the medical staff had laid out before the preseason, not a reaction to any injury.

“Just management in terms of we got five games every other day and had a good practice this morning,” Johnson said in Salt Lake City. “And so just trying to continue to get into in-season game shape as best we can, which is a little bit of a balancing act, and give some opportunities for other guys that have earned it.”

Fox and Bryant trending, but not promised

Fox has not played this preseason. He missed the opener against Atlanta with what the team called general soreness, then sat at Phoenix and Utah with what Johnson described as “general tightness in his hip.” Johnson has said it is “nothing serious or long term” and that the club does not want to push it. This hip issue is separate from the right high ankle sprain Fox played through during last spring’s playoff run. Fox said this week that the ankle healed over the summer.

Bryant has been out since he rolled his right ankle stepping on Vassell’s foot in Saturday’s loss at Phoenix. Johnson sounded hopeful about both players without committing to either one.

“Optimistic, but I’m not sure they’re going to play, but they’re trending in the right way,” Johnson said, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Harris and Quaintance stay sidelined

The Spurs have ruled Harris out for the rest of the preseason after he strained his left calf in the first week of training camp. The 15-year veteran signed a two-year, $31 million deal this summer. He was in the background at Wednesday’s shootaround while the healthy players finished with a competitive four-on-four drill.

Johnson has called Harris’ status for opening night “totally questionable.” First-round rookie Jayden Quaintance, the 20th overall pick, is out indefinitely while he rehabs from offseason knee surgery. Center Malik Williams also did not play Monday.

What comes next

Tipoff at Frost Bank Center is 7 p.m. CT (3 a.m. Thursday in Cairo). Phoenix is also expected to rest much of its rotation: Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Miles Bridges, Dillon Brooks, Collin Gillespie and Oso Ighodaro all missed the full morning shootaround. San Antonio is 0-3 in the preseason and has one exhibition left on Friday before the regular season starts next week. The final pregame status for Fox and Bryant should come from Johnson before tip.
