Stephen Curry scored 34 points and missed his first free throw of the season with five seconds left, and Charles Bassey had a career-high 19 off the bench, as the Golden State Warriors came back from 16 down to beat the Phoenix Suns 116-113 on Monday night at Chase Center.

Curry was 11-of-12 at the line and had come in 51-of-51 for the season. Asked afterward whether the miss surprised him, he did not hesitate.

18 points in eight minutes

Curry had nine points on 2-of-7 shooting at halftime, most of them from the free-throw line, with the Warriors trailing 57-51 after being down 55-39 late in the second quarter. He opened the second half with a three 15 seconds in, and scored 18 points in the first eight-plus minutes of the third quarter to get to 27. The Warriors outscored Phoenix 42-36 in the period and it was tied entering the fourth.

He finished 9-of-21 from the field and 5-of-13 from three, with seven assists and six rebounds. In his last three games he has scored 44, 31 and 34 points. He is averaging exactly 30.0 for the season, at 38, in his 18th year.

Bassey’s night

Bassey had 19 points and eight rebounds, and tied Curry as the Warriors’ leading scorer at halftime. After Draymond Green was ejected, Bassey checked in on the next possession, scored on a tip-in through contact and then assisted Curry on a three. He also had 10 rebounds in a spot start on Sunday against the Clippers, and 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench the last time these teams met.

The Green ejection

Green was ejected two minutes into the third quarter after consecutive technical fouls. Khaman Maluach had pushed him to the floor in the paint, Green got up and threw Maluach down, and Dillon Brooks rushed in and the two shoved each other, with Green putting a hand on Brooks’ neck. Both got technicals.

Curry said afterward that Green “lit a fire” and the Warriors “had to respond.” He also said Phoenix, 1-3 and rested, played “unbelievable” in the first half, and that the team tried to “weather the storm” and “just execute” until the third-quarter run.

Tempers flared again with 7:26 left, when Miles Bridges was given a technical for shoving Bassey after Bassey held on to Jalen Green’s head during a rebound. Devin Booker had 26 points for Phoenix and fouled out with 58 seconds left, Bridges had 21 and Brooks 18.

Brandin Podziemski added 20 points and Yaxel Lendeborg, a night after his career-high 37, had 16 points, five assists and five rebounds. The Warriors have won five in a row after an 0-3 start, something they never did last season, and are at the midpoint of a six-game homestand. They started their seventh different lineup in eight games.
