The New Orleans Pelicans are an American professional basketball team based in New Orleans. The Pelicans compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The team plays its home games at Smoothie King Center.
The Pelicans were established as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season when George Shinn, then owner of the Charlotte Hornets, relocated the franchise to New Orleans. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the team temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City, where they spent two seasons as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets before returning to New Orleans for the 2007–08 season. In 2013, the Hornets announced that they would change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans.
In 22 seasons of play since the original franchise relocated from Charlotte, the New Orleans franchise has achieved an overall regular season record of 831–937 (.470) and qualified for the playoffs nine times. Their achievements include two playoff series victories and one division title.

New Orleans has a basketball identity shaped by its distinctive culture and a complex franchise timeline. The current team adopted the Pelicans name in 2013, linking its branding to Louisiana’s state bird. Official franchise records help distinguish this history from earlier teams and name changes involving Charlotte.
New Orleans’ Jazz played here from 1974 to 1979 before moving to Utah. They are a separate franchise from the Pelicans.
New Orleans called its current team the Hornets until the Pelicans name took effect in 2013. Its updated official history begins in 2002–03, excluding the original Charlotte Hornets’ 1988–2002 seasons. Compare those earlier years with the Charlotte Hornets guide rather than joining every team called “Hornets” into one record.
After Hurricane Katrina, the Hornets spent 2005–06 and 2006–07 based in Oklahoma City, returning full-time to New Orleans in 2007. That temporary arrangement explains the New Orleans/Oklahoma City label on older schedules and box scores.
The basketball arena opened on October 29, 1999. New Orleans Arena became Smoothie King Center in February 2014; the name change did not mean the team moved buildings. The arena’s opening, the current team’s arrival and the Pelicans rebrand are three different milestones.
The official arena guide directs visitors to each event’s own bag and door-opening information. Its general prohibited-items list excludes backpacks and gives a 14 × 14 × 6-inch maximum for other bags, subject to event-specific changes. Do not assume a rule from another NBA arena applies here.
Concessions, merchandise and parking are cashless, and the arena does not permit re-entry. Cash-to-card conversion is available at Sections 108 and 310; check the terms before loading funds, because unused balances incur a monthly fee after 90 days. For rideshare pickup, follow signs through Champions Square to the designated Poydras Street zone north of the campus. The venue says pickup requests can only be made once you reach that zone.
Start with the official team schedule and roster to understand the current group. Then compare the team’s pace, shot selection, and defensive approach with its opponents. The meaning of a result changes with the matchup, the available lineup, and the season context.
Use the official team website for current news, roster details, schedules, and venue information. Arena naming and event arrangements can change; verify those details before planning a visit. Use the official team ticket links to plan your visit.
