Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe says the bond with new teammate Jaylen Brown is real, and it is already shaping how he prepares for his second NBA season.

“JB is one of my favorite people in the world,” Edgecombe said at practice on Tuesday, according to Sixers Wire. “He’s a great person, man. Someone that I still talk to damn near every day.”

Brown said it first

Edgecombe was returning a compliment. After the Sixers’ 120-97 preseason-opening win over the New York Knicks on October 6, Brown said, “I love VJ already. That’s one of my favorite people in the world, and we just met,” according to reports Philadelphia and Sixers Wire. Brown added that Edgecombe’s talent level is “off the charts” and that he is excited to help him keep growing.

The two only became teammates this summer, when Philadelphia traded for Brown in June. A few months earlier they were on opposite sides of a seven-game first-round series, when the Sixers came back from a 3-1 deficit to eliminate Brown’s Boston Celtics.

What Edgecombe is taking from Brown

Edgecombe said the old relationship was limited to a “good game, young fella” after games. Now he described Brown as someone he looks up to on the daily habits side of the job. “How you take care of yourself, how you prepare for games, how you break down film, just anything like that,” Edgecombe said, per Sixers Wire.

Earlier in camp, Edgecombe told reporters Brown is “someone I actually lean on for information,” crediting his “Cal Berkeley education” and calling him “my dawg,” according to Liberty Ballers.

Why it matters for Philadelphia

Edgecombe, the No. 3 overall pick in 2025, is coming off an All-Rookie first-team season and a third-place finish in Rookie of the Year voting, per The Philadelphia Inquirer. He now shares the floor with Brown, LeBron James, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, which means his role is about to change. In the preseason opener, with James, Embiid and Maxey resting, Edgecombe and Brown carried the Sixers together, and Edgecombe finished with 12 points, seven assists and no turnovers, according to reports Philadelphia.

The Sixers open the regular season at the Knicks on October 20.
