Warriors release Dalen Terry, Tyler Burton and Alex Toohey to set opening roster

All three could resurface with Santa Cruz in the G League, and the cuts leave a clearer path for guard Brandon Williams to stick with Golden State.

The Golden State Warriors waived wing Dalen Terry, forward Tyler Burton and Australian forward Alex Toohey on Saturday, October 17, the team announced, completing the expected cuts four days before their season opener.

The decision on Terry had been in the air since Friday, when reports reported that Golden State intended to let him go. The moves also help guard Brandon Williams, whose deal stays non-guaranteed until January and whose odds of opening the season with the club improved once Terry was out of the mix.

Terry’s crowded path

Terry, 24, joined the Warriors in August on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract. He appeared in five exhibition games, averaging 6.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals in about 14 minutes a night.

The Chicago Bulls picked him 18th overall in 2022, and he spent three and a half seasons there before a trade sent him to the New York Knicks. He was quickly moved on to the New Orleans Pelicans, who waived him, and then landed with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-way deal that was later turned into a two-year standard contract. Philadelphia let him go in July to create cap room for LeBron James.

Siegel expects Terry to begin the season with the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s G League affiliate. Because his camp contract was not an Exhibit 10, he is not in line for the bonus that comes with reporting to the G League team.

Burton and Toohey

Burton, 26, signed an Exhibit 10 deal earlier this month. He played 12 games for the Memphis Grizzlies last season, averaging 10.8 points and 4.2 rebounds, and Golden State already controls his G League rights after a trade between Santa Cruz and the Memphis Hustle.

Toohey, the 52nd pick in the 2025 draft, is returning to familiar ground. Golden State released him from his two-way contract last December after a knee injury that required season-ending surgery, before he had played an NBA game, then invited him back to camp in September to compete for an open two-way spot. Both he and Burton are expected to land in Santa Cruz.
