The Portland Trail Blazers routed the Utah Jazz 112-90 in Salt Lake City on Halloween afternoon, and the decisive stretch came early: a 17-0 first-quarter run while Utah went almost six minutes without a basket. Portland moved to 4-1 and is still unbeaten away from home, and it did it in its first game without Ja Morant, who is out with a hamstring strain. These are the moments both clubs posted from the afternoon.

Full box score and play-by-play: Portland at Utah

The whole game in one reel

Utah’s own cut of the afternoon shows how quickly the gap opened. Portland led 59-42 at the half and pushed the margin to 28 late, holding the Jazz to their lowest score of the season by more than a dozen points.

Deni Avdija’s 24-point afternoon

Avdija was the best player on the floor, scoring 19 of his 24 before halftime and living at the free-throw line, where he went 10 of 13. He started the 17-0 run himself and finished it with a layup and a three.

Donovan Clingan’s monster mash

Clingan scored modestly but controlled the glass with a game-high nine rebounds, and this Halloween slam was the loudest of his touches. Portland won the boards 48-37.

Vit Krejci’s trickery

With Morant and Shaedon Sharpe both sidelined, Portland needed other hands to create. Krejci’s sleight of hand is a small example of how the Blazers kept finding easy looks.

Damian Lillard drives and finds Krejci

Lillard scored 22 but made only 3 of 10 threes, so his passing mattered. Collapsing the defense and kicking out to an open shooter is how Portland piled up a 48-33 edge from beyond the arc.

Yang Hansen lets it fly

The second-year center stepping out and connecting from deep added one more three in a game where the Blazers outscored Utah by 15 from long range.

Darryn Peterson’s 16 for Utah

The rookie was Utah’s bright spot, leading the Jazz with 16 points and four assists on a day when Lauri Markkanen shot 3 of 14 and Keyonte George was held to eight. It still ended a fourth straight loss.

Lillard after the game

Lillard credited the group for holding things together without Morant. After allowing 124.3 points a game over its previous three, Portland’s defense was the story of the afternoon.

What comes next

Portland’s next stop is Denver for a 9:00 pm ET tip on Monday, November 2 (Blazers at Nuggets preview), while Utah opens a road swing in San Antonio at 8:30 pm ET that Monday (Jazz at Spurs preview).
