Portland Trail Blazers beat Utah Jazz 112-90 as Deni Avdija scores 24 and a 17-0 first-quarter run buries Utah

Deni Avdija scored 24, Damian Lillard added 22 and a 17-0 first-quarter run put Portland in control as the Blazers won 112-90 in Salt Lake City in their first game without Ja Morant.

The Portland Trail Blazers beat the Utah Jazz 112-90 at the Delta Center on Saturday, October 31, and the game was effectively settled inside the first quarter. Trailing 7-6, Portland ran off 17 straight points while Utah went nearly six minutes without scoring, and the Jazz spent the rest of the afternoon chasing. Deni Avdija led everyone with 24 points and Damian Lillard added 22 as the Blazers moved to 4-1 and stayed unbeaten on the road.

It was also Portland’s first game since Ja Morant strained his left hamstring in Thursday’s loss to Memphis, an injury that is expected to keep him out for most of November. Without him, and still without Shaedon Sharpe after knee surgery, the Blazers answered with their best defensive game of the season.

The 17-0 burst that decided it

The opening run was built almost entirely by Portland’s two leading scorers. Avdija started it at the free-throw line and later added a layup and a three; Lillard contributed three free throws and a three of his own; Jrue Holiday chipped in a short jumper and two more foul shots. Avdija and Lillard had 13 of the 17 points between them, and Lillard’s free throws made it 23-7 with 3:29 left in the first quarter.

Portland led by as many as 19 before halftime and went into the break up 59-42. Avdija already had 19 points by then, 10 of them from the line, where he made 10 of 11 attempts in the first half alone.

Turning points after the break

Any hope of a Utah response ended in the third quarter. Portland forced four straight Jazz turnovers in one stretch, Toumani Camara harassed whoever brought the ball up, and the lead grew to 26 before the period ended. The margin peaked at 28 when it reached 110-82 with 2:41 to play.

The gaps in the team numbers were just as wide. Portland outscored Utah 48-33 from three-point range and 34-21 at the free-throw line, won the rebounding battle 48-37, and turned 20 Utah turnovers into a game that was never in doubt.

Leading performers

Avdija finished with 24 points and five rebounds on 50 percent shooting and went 10 of 13 from the line. Lillard had 22 points, four assists, two steals and a block, though he made only 3 of 10 threes. Holiday, Camara and Scoot Henderson scored 14 points each; Camara got nearly all of his from deep, making 4 of 9 threes. Donovan Clingan pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

For Utah, rookie Darryn Peterson led the way with 16 points and four assists. Lauri Markkanen returned from a two-game absence with a sprained wrist and scored 13, but on 3-of-14 shooting. Brice Sensabaugh added 12. Keyonte George, who came in scoring more than 24 points a game, was held to eight. Jaxson Hayes and Ace Bailey had seven rebounds apiece.

What the numbers say

The 90 points were Utah’s lowest total of the season by a distance; the Jazz had not been held under 103 in any earlier game. They shot about 37 percent from the field, their worst mark so far, and 27.5 percent from three. The defensive turnaround was just as sharp on the other side: Portland had allowed an average of 124.3 points over its previous three games.

For Utah, it was a fourth straight loss, and the next stop is San Antonio.
