NBA Communications highlighted a rare scoring-and-hardware double for Jalen Brunson after the New York Knicks’ 2026 title run. In 2025-26, Brunson led the NBA playoffs in scoring at 28.4 points per game and earned Finals MVP in the same season — only the sixth player on that short list.

The six-player club

According to NBA Communications, Brunson joins Jerry West, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James as the only players to lead the playoffs in scoring and win Finals MVP in the same season.

That pairing is hard to collect. Playoff scoring crowns reward the longest, loudest volume stretch of the postseason. Finals MVP rewards the last series alone. Landing both in one spring means carrying the offense for weeks, then closing the championship series at a title-winner’s pace.

Finals line that sealed the hardware

On WhyNBA’s Finals MVP archive, Brunson’s championship series line was 32.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game across five Finals games at 39.2 minutes per game. The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 4–1. Those Finals averages sit on top of the broader playoff scoring lead of 28.4 points per game that NBA Communications cited for the full postseason.

The same archive lists Michael Jordan with six career Finals MVP awards — the most in the record — while Brunson’s 2026 selection is his first.

Why the note landed in mid-October

The league’s post landed as the defending champions worked through a rough preseason. Exhibition records do not rewrite June. The historical club still frames how Brunson’s last postseason stacked against the short list of scorers who also left the Finals with the MVP trophy.

Hubs stay on last season until tip-off

WhyNBA’s league-leaders page still carries the 2025-26 qualified boards, including Brunson’s playoff scoring mark among the playoff leader tables, plus growing 2026-27 single-game and clutch cards from preseason boxes. The standings hub still shows final 2025-26 conference tables and notes that the live 2026-27 table starts after the first regular-season final on opening night, October 20.
