SGA draws first push-off foul as NBA enforces off-arm guidance in preseason

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oct. 13, 2026 — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got whistled for a push-off offensive foul in the Thunder’s preseason win over the Indiana Pacers, a call that immediately lit up social clips as an early look at how strictly officials will police off-arm separation this season.

The play happened in Oklahoma City’s 114-112 overtime victory at Paycom Center. Clips shared on X showed the two-time Kia NBA MVP creating space with his off arm before the whistle, a move fans have long associated with his isolation game.

Why the call fits the league’s focus

Before preseason, the NBA put offensive off-arm push-offs at the center of its 2026-27 officiating guidance, along with illegal screens and contact that stops cutters and straight-line drives. WhyNBA broke down that package in our push-offs and off-ball contact guide.

The SGA whistle lands in the same enforcement window as Jalen Brunson’s flopping technical against Minnesota: officials are showing players that both the contact itself and exaggerated reactions are under a sharper microscope.

What it means heading into Opening Night

Gilgeous-Alexander still put up a strong night in limited minutes as Oklahoma City improved in the preseason, and Indiana got a strong return from Tyrese Haliburton in the same game. The bigger story for the league is whether stars who create space with the off arm will adjust before the regular season opens Oct. 20.
