Norman Powell scored 25 points, rookie Caleb Wilson added 21 and the Chicago Bulls closed on a 12-2 run to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 132-125 at Fiserv Forum on Friday, October 23. The game tipped four hours earlier than first scheduled because the Milwaukee Brewers were hosting Game 1 of the World Series that night.

Tyler Herro scored 34 points in his first home game for Milwaukee, the Milwaukee-area native having arrived in the offseason trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami. His step-back three and a three through contact gave the Bucks a 121-118 lead with 3:45 left, but Milwaukee scored only four more points. Chicago got its first win after a 135-92 opening loss in Toronto, and the Bucks fell to 0-2.

How it turned

Milwaukee opened with a 19-4 run and led 32-17 after one quarter. Chicago’s bench flipped the second. With the Bulls down 49-37, Tre Jones set up Leonard Miller, Isaac Okoro and Buddy Hield on a 22-5 run, and Hield’s 24-foot three made it 55-51 Chicago. Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kyle Kuzma scored late, and the Bucks went into halftime ahead 62-61.

Milwaukee took the third quarter 42-41. Kuzma, Kel’el Ware and Brayden Burries kept Milwaukee in front, and the Bucks led 102-95 inside the final 1:30 before Jones and Wilson scored on layups and Jalen Smith dunked with 0.8 seconds left to make it 104-102 after three. Noa Essengue dunked twice early in the fourth, Wilson threw down a running dunk and Hield’s three made it 115-107 with 7:19 left, a 20-5 run in all.

Herro answered with 11 points in three minutes: a step-back jumper, a floater, a 25-foot step-back three and then a 24-footer as Miller fouled him, a flagrant 1, to put the Bucks back in front. Powell’s floater and Okoro’s layup off a Jones pass made it 122-121, and Myles Turner scored with 2:51 left for Milwaukee’s last lead at 123-122. Wilson made four straight free throws, Powell two more with 20.2 seconds left and Jones four in the final 10 seconds.

The numbers

Chicago went 28-of-30 at the free-throw line, Powell 9-of-9, and scored 62 points in the paint. Its bench outscored Milwaukee’s 59-35: Miller had 19 on 7-of-11 shooting, Hield 13 on 5-of-6, Okoro 12 and Jones 11 points with 8 assists and a plus-24. Wilson shot 7-of-14 with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks, and the NBA noted that 19 of his 21 points came after halftime. Smith had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals, and Josh Giddey had 9 assists but only 6 points. The Bulls made just 12 of 45 threes and still won.

Milwaukee’s side

Herro shot 12-of-24, 5-of-10 from three, with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Jaquez had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists but also 6 turnovers, Kuzma had 14 points and 9 rebounds, and Turner scored 12 with 5 blocks. The Bucks shot 41 percent from three, 19-of-46, but went 14-of-26 at the line and committed 19 turnovers, and Chicago scored 22 points off them. Before tip-off, the arena held a moment of silence for Don Nelson, the winningest coach in Bucks history, who died on August 9 at 86, and there was a video tribute at halftime.
