Jordan Hawkins and the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to part ways, Shams Charania reported Friday night, October 2.

Charania described the decision as mutual and said Hawkins could look for a new team in free agency once he clears waivers. That condition matters: the report does not establish that Hawkins has cleared, signed elsewhere or reached an agreement with another club.

A short stay in Memphis

Memphis acquired Hawkins and Micah Peavy from New Orleans on September 8, with AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson going the other way.

Hawkins was the 14th pick in the 2023 draft. Last season, he averaged 5.1 points in 51 games.

The reported separation would end his Memphis stint less than a month after that trade, giving his search for a role another reset before the regular season.

What the waiver process would decide

A waiver claim and a free-agent signing lead to different outcomes. A successful claim transfers the existing contract to the claiming team. If the player goes unclaimed and clears, he can pursue a new contract.

The claim window lasts 48 hours from the league’s notice to teams, including weekends. A reporter’s post is not that notice, so Charania’s Friday timestamp cannot be used to calculate an exact clearance deadline for Hawkins.

For now, the established news is the reported agreement to separate. Confirmation of the formal waiver transaction, its outcome and Hawkins’ next destination remain separate developments to watch.
