MIAMI — Oct. 14, 2026 — Mikel Brown Jr. finally got on the floor. The Brooklyn Nets’ No. 6 overall pick, held out of the first three preseason games after rolling his left ankle in practice, made his NBA debut Wednesday night against the Miami Heat and drained a deep three on his first shot attempt.

Brown came off the bench as the Nets’ second-unit point guard on a minutes restriction. Through eight minutes in the first half he had five points on 2-of-3 shooting, including 1-of-2 from three, plus three rebounds. Head coach Jordi Fernández started Egor Dëmin and Keon Ellis in the backcourt, with Brown joining Nolan Traoré, Noah Clowney, Chaney Johnson and Moritz Wagner when the reserves checked in.

“It’s going to mean the world”

The wait had been long enough. Brown rolled the ankle about three weeks ago and missed Brooklyn’s wins over Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington while he worked his way back into five-on-five work. Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s game, he told Brian Lewis he was itching to play again — especially in Florida, where he grew up.

“Yeah, I feel amazing. Very exciting, because I’ve been waiting and itching to play for the longest to this point. So I’m glad to see that all the work is paying off and just continuing to stay on it and remain healthy.”

“I’ve been attacking it every single day. Just to be able to go out there and play basketball again, it’s going to mean the world — especially back in Florida for me. I’m basically back home, so I’m going to enjoy it.”

He had also described his approach while limited early in camp as soaking up the install rather than forcing a return: learning Fernández’s concepts, staying vocal in film sessions and making the reads second nature before he got back on the floor.

What the debut showed

The first shot told most of the story. Heat forward Nikola Jović went under a screen, Brown stepped into a deep look and splashed it. On his next touch he took an open lane for a baseline layup. ClutchPoints beat writer Erik Slater noted afterward that the rookie looked fluid in limited run.

Summer League had already offered a preview: Brown averaged 16.7 points, 4.0 assists and 1.7 steals for Brooklyn in Las Vegas. Wednesday was the first chance to do any of that against an NBA defense that included Giannis Antetokounmpo, Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson on the other side.

The regular-season opener is Oct. 21 at Barclays Center against the Hornets. Fernández has been careful with minutes all preseason, and Brown’s next step is turning one clean half into a rotation role alongside Dëmin, Traoré and the rest of Brooklyn’s young backcourt.
