Opening Day rosters due Monday at 5 p.m. ET: what the Oct. 19 NBA deadline means

The NBA sets Opening Day rosters Monday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. ET — 15 standard contracts and three two-ways — one day before the regular season tips off.

Monday is cut day for every NBA front office. The league’s official 2026-27 key dates calendar sets Opening Day rosters for Monday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. ET — less than 24 hours before the regular season tips off Tuesday on NBC and Peacock.

That deadline is the line between training-camp chaos and the 15-man season. By then, each club must be down to no more than 15 players on standard contracts and three on two-way deals. Everything that is still on a roster after 5 p.m. Eastern is what that team will open the season with unless it later makes a waiver, trade or injury replacement.

What the Monday deadline actually does

During camp, teams can carry larger groups. On Monday afternoon that window closes. The official calendar on NBA.com lists a single line for the day — “Rosters set for NBA Opening Day (5 p.m. ET)” — and it sits immediately above Tuesday’s Opening Night tripleheader: Boston at Detroit (3 p.m. ET), Philadelphia at New York (7 p.m. ET) and Oklahoma City at San Antonio (9:30 p.m. ET).

The same Monday is also the last day of the 2026 offseason for several contract moves tied to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Teams can still convert an Exhibit 10 deal into a two-way through that deadline. They can still complete a sign-and-trade. And players eligible for a rookie-scale extension, or for a veteran extension with more than one season left on their current deal, generally need those papers filed before the season starts.

Why many cuts land on Saturday, not Monday

Plenty of final decisions will still hit before Monday. Players on fully non-guaranteed deals are often waived on or before Saturday, Oct. 17, because a player who is waived on Monday would not clear waivers until Wednesday — the second day of the regular season — and would earn pay for those days even if the contract itself was non-guaranteed.

Clubs that are cutting a player whose salary is already guaranteed have less reason to rush; that money is owed either way. Exhibit 10 players who are still around after Saturday are the ones to watch: hanging onto a spot through that cut often means a two-way conversion or a real 15-man job is coming.

What fans should watch over the next four days

Between now and Monday evening, expect a wave of waiver announcements, two-way conversions and last looks at camp battles that looked undecided in preseason. Member Days on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 15-16) give free NBA ID holders League Pass access to the final preseason slate, then the calendar turns over fast: Saturday’s non-guaranteed cut window, Monday’s 5 p.m. ET roster lock, and Tuesday’s Opening Night.

The deadline does not freeze every contract forever. Guarantees, 10-day deals and the trade market all return later on the calendar. But for Opening Night itself, Monday at 5 p.m. Eastern is the league-wide finish line.
