HUAMBO, Angola — NBA Africa and Africell brought Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA programming to Huambo for the first time on Oct. 13, hosting a clinic for 250 boys and girls ages 18 and under at the Osvaldo Serra Van-Dúnem Pavilion.

The day mixed NBA Fit activity, basketball instruction and life-skills sessions. Players worked on shooting, dribbling, passing and defense, then sat for off-court talks on leadership, teamwork and discipline. It is the latest stop in a 2026 calendar of Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA events across Angola and other markets where Africell operates.

Why Huambo matters

Huambo is a new city on the Africell–NBA Africa map. The partnership, launched in 2022, has already reached thousands of young Angolans through tournaments, clinics and court projects. Bringing a full clinic day to Huambo expands that footprint beyond the coastal hubs that have hosted most of the earlier events.

Organizers framed the stop as part of a shared push to widen access to basketball development nationwide. The same collaboration has recently stretched into the Democratic Republic of the Congo, The Gambia and Sierra Leone, layering youth programming onto the league’s wider Africa growth plan.

Part of a bigger Africa push

The Huambo clinic sits alongside other NBA Africa community work this fall. Earlier this month the league’s African arm announced a plan to build or renovate 55 courts in the DRC in Dikembe Mutombo’s honor, with Quest Water Global as infrastructure partner. Nestlé also signed on to put Milo, Nescau and Nesquik into Jr. NBA programs across 21 markets, including Ghana and Nigeria.

NBA Africa runs the league’s business on the continent, including the Basketball Africa League with FIBA, and keeps offices in Cairo, Dakar, Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi. Youth clinics like Huambo are the grassroots end of that network: skill work and life skills for kids who may never reach a BAL roster but still get coached under the same brand.

What to watch next

  • More Angola stops: further Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA events on the 2026 Africell calendar, including cities that have not hosted programming before.
  • New markets: how the DRC, Gambia and Sierra Leone expansions translate into clinics, tournaments and court openings.
  • Court projects: progress on the Mutombo courts in Kinshasa and Mbuji-Mayi, and whether similar builds land in Africell’s other operating countries.

NBA Africa has not released a full public schedule for the remaining 2026 Africell events. The Huambo clinic is the clearest signal yet that the partnership is still opening new cities inside Angola, not only repeating stops in places that already know the program.
