Jimmy Butler III will miss the start of the 2026-27 season as he continues his recovery from the torn right ACL he suffered on January 19 against his former team, the Miami Heat. Golden State cleared him for light on-court work in late September, and during training camp in Hawaii he told NBC Sports Bay Area that he has started running and can dunk again. Butler might be able to play in January or February, according to reporter Anthony Slater, with Moses Moody considered ahead of him in their rehabs. “We get Jimmy back around February instead of losing him in February,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “So, what’s our job? Lay the best foundation, best platform for success before that.”
The Warriors were prepared to part with Butler at the 2026 trade deadline if the Milwaukee Bucks had accepted their offer for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Slater reported. Milwaukee declined, and Butler has not been offered in any trade since. Butler is on an expiring $56.8 million contract in 2026-27 and becomes extension-eligible on February 6. He said the contract is not on his mind. “I don’t pay attention to it,” Butler said. “My job is to go out there and hoop.”
Golden State finishes the preseason against Portland on October 16 and opens the regular season at the Lakers on October 21 without Butler.
Read our stories: Moses Moody ahead of Jimmy Butler in Warriors rehabs, could return in December or January; Warriors were ready to trade Jimmy Butler for Giannis at the 2026 deadline.
Butler is a 6-foot-6, 230-pound wing who wins with strength, footwork and timing rather than volume three-point shooting. He lives at the free-throw line, posts up smaller defenders, runs pick-and-roll as a secondary playmaker and is one of the league’s most respected late-game decision makers. On defense he reads passing lanes and guards multiple positions, which earned him five All-Defensive selections.
Before the injury, Butler played 38 games and averaged 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 31.1 minutes on 51.9% shooting, 37.6% from three and 86.4% from the line, according to Basketball Reference. He was Golden State’s second-leading scorer behind Stephen Curry. Without him the Warriors beat the Clippers in the play-in on April 15 but lost at Phoenix two nights later and missed the playoffs.
