Toronto announced on September 23 that Kawhi Leonard has signed a multi-year extension. The official release published by NBA.com does not disclose financial terms. That settles the agreement’s status, while leaving the detailed contract figures dependent on ESPN’s earlier reporting.

On September 22, Leonard’s agent Harrison Gaines told ESPN that the sides had agreed to a two-year, $115 million extension. ESPN reports a player option for 2028–29 and a total remaining deal of three years and $165 million. The club’s announcement does not independently confirm those amounts or the option.

Separate the extension from the total commitment

An extension headline usually describes added years. It should not be read as the complete amount or duration remaining on a player’s contract. Here, ESPN distinguishes the two added years from the three-year total. Keeping those numbers separate prevents a misleading comparison with contracts that are reported using their entire remaining value.

The reported option also matters. A player option gives the player a decision under the contract’s terms; it should not be described as a team-controlled year. It can influence future planning without telling us today whether it will be exercised.

The whynba read: savings are only part of flexibility

ESPN says Leonard accepted less than the maximum available extension as the sides discussed Toronto’s growing salary commitments. That can be significant without creating an equal amount of spendable cap space. NBA team-building rules consider the wider payroll and the mechanisms a team is allowed to use.

For readers evaluating the roster, the practical exercise is to separate three questions. What salary is committed? Which players and roles are already covered? What avenues remain to add or retain help? A smaller individual contract number does not answer all three by itself.

What to watch next

The signing removes the need to wait for a formal announcement. An updated account of Toronto’s overall commitments is still needed before drawing conclusions about its next move. On the court, watch how the Raptors distribute creation, shooting and defensive assignments around Leonard; the extension alone does not establish a lineup or predict his availability.
