Kawhi Anthony Leonard (/kəˈwaɪ/kə-WHY; born June 29, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A two-time NBA champion and two-time Finals MVP, he is a seven-time All-Star and seven-time member of the All-NBA Team (including three first-team selections). Nicknamed the "Claw" or "Klaw" for his ball-hawking skills and exceptionally large hands, Leonard is often regarded as one of the greatest two-way players in NBA history, earning seven All-Defensive Team selections and winning Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2015 and 2016. In 2021, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
Leonard played two seasons of college basketball for San Diego State. He was selected 15th overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2011 NBA draft before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs on draft night.
With the Spurs, Leonard won an NBA championship in 2014 and was named the Finals Most Valuable Player. After seven seasons with the Spurs, Leonard was traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2018. In his only season with the Raptors in 2019, he led the Raptors to their first NBA championship and won his second Finals MVP award (one of only three players to win Finals MVP with multiple teams, along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James). He subsequently moved to his hometown of Los Angeles and signed with the Los Angeles Clippers as a free agent in July 2019. In 2021, Leonard led the team to the conference finals for the first time in franchise history. In 2026, Leonard was traded back to the Raptors.

Kawhi Leonard missed the preseason opener against Miami in Québec City. Josh Lewenberg reported on October 3 that Leonard was also unlikely to play against the Clippers in Vancouver on October 10 as Toronto continued his ramp-up plan. The October 10 expectation is not a final game-day designation.
Toronto announced a multi-year contract extension for Kawhi Leonard after acquiring him from the Clippers on September 14. The club’s release confirmed the extension but left its financial terms undisclosed. This is a second Toronto chapter, separate from his 2018–19 season and the championship run described below.
Leonard’s final college season was a turning point for San Diego State as well as for him. In 2010–11, the Aztecs finished 34–3, earned their first Division I NCAA tournament wins and reached the Sweet 16. Leonard led the team with 15.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. His college foundation was therefore broader than a defensive reputation: San Diego State relied on him to lead both its scoring and rebounding before he entered the NBA.
By 2015–16, Leonard was combining his established defensive impact with a larger scoring role for the San Antonio Spurs. He averaged 21.2 points, earned his first All-Star selection and won Defensive Player of the Year for a second consecutive season. San Antonio finished 67–15 and led the league in defensive rating. The timing matters: his first All-Star season came after his 2014 Finals MVP, showing how his responsibilities continued to expand after an early championship breakthrough.
Leonard’s 41 points and buzzer-beater lifted the Toronto Raptors past Philadelphia, 92–90, in Game 7 on May 12, 2019. Toronto went on to win the championship, with Leonard earning another Finals MVP. His two title chapters belong in different contexts: the first came during his rise in San Antonio; the second included being Toronto’s decisive scorer in an elimination game.
2015-16, 2014-15.
