Game state source: whynba · Retrieved Oct 13, 10:39 am EDTErik Spoelstra is approaching Miami's rebuilt roster by combining the players' strengths rather than changing who they are, as Thompson embraces the work.

Erik Spoelstra is approaching Miami’s rebuilt roster with an emphasis on combining the players’ strengths rather than changing who they are. Tim Reynolds’ October 12 Associated Press report captures the coach’s enthusiasm for a group now featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson alongside Bam Adebayo.
Spoelstra said the players, coaches and front office appeared aligned around the work ahead. His comments describe the mood entering the season, not a claim that Miami’s new combinations are already complete.
Thompson told AP that Spoelstra’s speech before the first training-camp practice left him so energized that he struggled to sleep. He praised a coach who respects players’ experience while still pushing them to contribute.
Thompson’s point was that effectiveness remains possible at different stages of a career if a player is willing to work. That is his view of the coaching approach, rather than a promise about his production or playing time.
Reynolds connects Miami’s faster offense from last season to Antetokounmpo’s arrival. Moving the ball upcourt quickly and putting pressure on defenses can suit his game, but the report also notes that the previous season’s offensive changes were not matched by enough chemistry.
Antetokounmpo said Spoelstra makes the task easier by putting players in the right places. Former Miami star Chris Bosh and longtime coach Doc Rivers also expressed optimism in AP’s report. Their assessments are expectations, not evidence of a future playoff result.
“We don’t want to reinvent guys. We just want to add to (them),” Spoelstra said. He described the aim as improving players while bringing their existing strengths together so they help one another.
The coaching task now is to turn that shared excitement into habits and workable combinations. Preseason glimpses and veteran endorsements do not settle Miami’s regular-season ceiling.
