Stephen Curry on LeBron to the Warriors: there was never real momentum

SAN FRANCISCO — Oct. 14, 2026 — Stephen Curry finally put a clear line under the summer noise: a LeBron James move to Golden State was never close to happening, even if the Warriors wanted to be in the conversation.

Talking with Frank Isola on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Curry walked through how those offseason check-ins actually felt from his side — and why the Philadelphia decision did not surprise him once James started taking his time.

Was LeBron to the Warriors ever a real possibility?

“He’s gonna run his own journey”

“If there was a conversation, and if there was ever some momentum, it would be known based on the profile LeBron has,” Curry said. “If he picks up the phone and says, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ you want to be in the conversation for a guy like that, that’s picking his landing spot. The way he went about it, and the way he was taking his time, being patient, and the surprise with Philly, he’s gonna run his own journey that way, and he deserves to be able to do that. As a friend, an Olympic teammate, I’m happy for him that he found somewhere he wants to be.”

That is the cleanest version of the story from Curry’s mouth: stay available if the call comes, respect the process when it does not, and treat the Sixers landing as James choosing his own path rather than a Warriors near-miss.

Olympic teammate, Finals rival, free-agent reality

Curry and James spent years on opposite sides of the Finals before sharing a Team USA locker room. That history made the rumor mill loud enough that SiriusXM framed the clip around a simple question — was LeBron to the Warriors ever a real possibility? — and Curry’s answer landed closer to “conversation, not momentum.”

Golden State entered the summer needing premium talent after missing on other big targets. James eventually chose Philadelphia. Curry’s tone in the sit-down was less about what the Warriors lost and more about what a veteran star is allowed to control when he is picking a landing spot.

Why it matters

Preseason chatter still circles the Warriors’ championship window and James’ first season in Philly. Curry’s interview closes one subplot before Tip-Off week: there was no secret pipeline that almost put the two Olympic teammates in the same backcourt. The Warriors move forward with Curry as the face of the franchise. James starts over with the Sixers. Both paths, in Curry’s words, stay their own.
