Tobi Lawal fouls out mad, then says he wants to be the best defender he can be

DALLAS — Oct. 14, 2026 — Tobi Lawal scored 16 points and went a perfect 8-of-8 at the line in Dallas’ 101-97 preseason loss to New Orleans, then sat for the cameras with the kind of honesty rookies usually save for later. He fouled out before the final minutes, and he did not dress it up.

“I was pissed. But I didn’t even know I had five fouls at the same time, so, apparently I’m a hack,” Lawal said, per Noah Weber.

Defending Herb Jones and Trey Murphy

The night was also a measuring stick on the other end. Lawal drew assignments against New Orleans wings Herb Jones and Trey Murphy III and framed it as the work he wants every night.

“Definitely a great experience…I want to be the best defender I possibly can. I’m not going to say the best in the league yet, cause I’m not there yet, but hopefully one day I am,” Lawal said, again via Weber.

Earlier, NBA TV caught the athletic side of the same sample — Lawal rolling to the rim and finishing above the defense in a clip that traveled with the Mavericks’ highlight package.

What Dusty May and Sergio De Larrea saw

Mavericks coach Dusty May backed the film with the same themes — compete, cut, pressure the rim. “He’s a competitor…His awareness for how he can impact games continues to improve…He’s a hard worker, he’s a great guy…Him putting pressure on the rim, him as a cutter…,” May said, per Weber.

Fellow rookie Sergio De Larrea described the lob chemistry from the passer’s seat. “It’s very fun. He grabs the ball super high even when I can’t pass for him lob, he’s telling me like ‘throw me a lob, throw me a lob’…Super athletic guy and it’s super easy to play with him…,” De Larrea said.

Lawal finished with 16 points to share the Dallas scoring lead with John Poulakidas. De Larrea added 10 points and six assists. Dallas won the glass 48-40 but coughed up 27 turnovers in the four-point home loss. Afterward Lawal also wore a wrap on his right shoulder — noted by Weber, with no further injury designation attached in the postgame clip.

Why it matters

Lawal is still carving out a Mavericks wing identity while Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving sit out stretches of the exhibitions. Sixteen points, perfect free throws, a viral finish and a fouled-out exit that he owned on camera is a clean preseason sample: athletic enough to dunk the lob, competitive enough to chase elite defensive wings, honest enough to laugh at himself when the whistle count gets away from him. Dallas hosts Atlanta on Friday to close the preseason.
