The story of the Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers are an American professional basketball team based in the Greater Los Angeles area. The Clippers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The team plays its home games at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, beginning with the 2024–25 NBA season. Previously, the Clippers played their home games at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles from 1999 to 2024, which they had shared with the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL). They are frequently referred to as "the Clips" or "LAC".

The franchise was founded as the Buffalo Braves in 1970 as an expansion team. Led by Hall of FamerBob McAdoo, the Braves reached the NBA playoffs three times during their eight seasons in Buffalo. Conflicts with the Canisius Golden Griffins over Buffalo Memorial Auditorium and the sale of the franchise led to their relocation from Buffalo to San Diego, California, in 1978 and subsequent rebranding as the San Diego Clippers, in reference to the sailing ships seen in San Diego Bay. The team saw little success on the court and missed the playoffs during all six of their years in San Diego.

In 1984, owner Donald Sterling controversially relocated the franchise to Los Angeles without NBA approval, which was permitted following legal action between the league and Sterling. Over the course of their first 27 seasons in Los Angeles, the Clippers qualified for the postseason only four times and won a single playoff round. They also have suffered from two scandals in recent decades, the first resulting in Sterling being forced to sell the team to Steve Ballmer, and the second costing them five years of first-round draft picks. They have been frequently described as a perennial loser in American professional sports, drawing unfavorable comparisons to the historically successful Lakers.

The Clippers’ history includes Buffalo and San Diego before the franchise moved to Los Angeles. The team’s move into Intuit Dome in Inglewood in 2024 established a dedicated home distinct from its former shared arena. That geographic path helps explain the different eras in the franchise’s identity.

One franchise, three city names

The franchise began as the Buffalo Braves in 1970–71, became the San Diego Clippers in 1978–79, and moved to Los Angeles for 1984–85. These are successive chapters of one franchise, so Buffalo-era achievements belong in Clippers history.

Buffalo’s Bob McAdoo won the 1975 MVP award while averaging 34.5 points per game. Decades later, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan formed the core of the Clippers’ “Lob City” era.

The first conference-finals breakthrough came in 2021, when Terance Mann scored 39 in the Game 6 victory over Utah. Los Angeles erased a 25-point deficit and won 131–119, closing the series 4–2.

Which Los Angeles arena does an old report mean?

The Clippers moved into Staples Center when it opened in 1999. That downtown building became Crypto.com Arena on December 25, 2021. Intuit Dome is a separate arena in Inglewood, opened August 15, 2024. Its first Clippers regular-season game was against Phoenix on October 23, 2024.

When reading an archive or booking a trip, distinguish the building’s name from the team’s home designation. Check the specific matchup and venue on the Clippers schedule.

Before your first Intuit Dome visit

Set up ticket access before reaching the entrance. The venue’s Know Before You Go guide explains the app, guest-ticket assignment and parking-pass process. GameFace ID is optional: the official FAQ also provides a digital-wallet Identity Pass option and assistance at the Answers Portal for visitors without a smartphone.

The FAQ currently permits personal clutches, including clear bags, up to 10 × 6 × 2 inches. Medical and childcare bags may be up to 14 × 14 × 6 inches and require X-ray screening. Recheck the event-specific policy before leaving. The venue’s general FAQ and basketball visitor guide give different door-opening intervals, so use your event’s current instructions rather than assuming one fixed arrival time.

Watching Los Angeles Clippers

Start with the official team schedule and roster to understand the current group. Then compare the team’s pace, shot selection, and defensive approach with its opponents. The meaning of a result changes with the matchup, the available lineup, and the season context.
