The story of the San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are an American professional basketball team based in San Antonio. The Spurs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The team plays its home games at Frost Bank Center. The Spurs are one of four former American Basketball Association (ABA) teams to remain intact in the NBA after the 1976 ABA–NBA merger, one of two former ABA teams to have won an NBA championship (the other being the Denver Nuggets), and the only former ABA team to have won multiple championships.

The franchise has won NBA championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014. As of the 2022–23 season, the Spurs had the highest winning percentage among active NBA franchises. As of May 2017, the Spurs had the best winning percentage of any franchise in the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada over the previous three decades. From 1999–2000 to 2016–17, the Spurs won 50 games each season, setting a record of 18 consecutive 50-win seasons. In the 2018–19 season, the Spurs matched an NBA record for most consecutive playoff appearances with 22. The team's success has coincided with the tenure of former head coach Gregg Popovich, as well as with the playing careers of Spurs icons David Robinson (1989–2003) and Tim Duncan (1997–2016). In the 2022–23 season, the Spurs celebrated the club's 50th anniversary.

San Antonio joined the NBA from the ABA in 1976. The Spurs’ five championships from 1999 through 2014 span changes in pace, spacing, and roster construction. The careers of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginóbili offer a starting point for exploring continuity and adaptation across different basketball eras.

Three arenas, and one building with three names

The Spurs’ San Antonio venue history starts at HemisFair Arena in 1973, then moves to the Alamodome in 1993. The Alamodome remained their home through 2002. Their next arena opened as the SBC Center for the 2002–03 season.

SBC Center, AT&T Center and Frost Bank Center refer to that same 2002 building. The Spurs made the Frost Bank Center name official on September 22, 2023. An older reference to AT&T therefore points to the current arena, while an Alamodome reference points to a different venue. Use the address on the specific event listing when planning a trip, rather than relying on a familiar historical name.

Putting the championship years on the map

San Antonio’s first championship came in 1999, when its home Finals games were played at the Alamodome. The 2003 title followed in the Spurs’ first season at the new SBC Center. Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2014 came during the same building’s tenure. This separates the franchise’s title history from the naming history of its home court.

Arriving at Frost Bank Center

The arena’s current address is 1 Frost Bank Center Drive. For rideshare pickup after an event, its official transport guide directs fans to leave by the doors nearest Section 125 and meet their driver in Pink Lot. Agree on that pickup point before the game ends; drop-off and pickup need not use the same location.

The current bag policy permits bags up to 12 × 12 × 6 inches, whether clear or opaque, but separately prohibits backpacks and several other bag types. Medical and diaper bags are allowed after screening and tagging. Check the event page for any variation. The arena is cashless and does not allow re-entry; its visitor policies explain payment options, guest services and event-specific opening times.

Watching San Antonio Spurs

Start with the official team schedule and roster to understand the current group. Then compare the team’s pace, shot selection, and defensive approach with its opponents. The meaning of a result changes with the matchup, the available lineup, and the season context.
