The Oklahoma City Thunder and guard Cason Wallace have agreed to a five-year, $139 million rookie-scale extension, according to reports on Sunday night, October 18. The deal settles the last big contract question on the champions’ roster a day before the extension deadline, and it keeps Wallace from reaching restricted free agency next summer.

Charania said Wallace’s agents at Excel Sports Management, Jeff Schwartz, Max Lipsett and Marcus Monk, negotiated the agreement. The Thunder had not formally announced the signing late Sunday, and the year-by-year structure, guarantees and any incentives have not been reported.

Where the number lands

The extension averages about $27.8 million a season. That is above the roughly $25 million starting point Marc Stein reported when talks opened, and above the four-year, $100 million deal Dyson Daniels signed with Atlanta. It stays below the five-year, $155 million extension Ausar Thompson received from Detroit.

Wallace becomes the sixth player from the 2023 draft to extend before the deadline, joining Victor Wembanyama, Keyonte George, Brandin Podziemski and the Thompson twins, Ausar and Amen.

Oklahoma City is paying for defense. The No. 10 pick in 2023 led the league in total steals (150) and deflections (339) last season, ranked third at 1.9 steals per game, made the All-Defensive second team and finished seventh in Defensive Player of the Year voting. He averaged 8.6 points and has shot 37.4% from three for his career.

What it means for the cap

Nothing changes this season. Wallace plays out the final year of his rookie deal at about $7.42 million, and the new money starts in 2027-28. That is the year the bill gets heavy. Public cap sheets already listed about $236.5 million in 2027-28 commitments for 12 players before this deal. Adding an average of $27.8 million pushes that toward $264 million for 13. This season’s second apron sits at $221.686 million, and cap analyst Yossi Gozlan projects the Thunder to be above that line next season.

On the court, the move locks in a starting five. Charania noted that all five projected starters are now signed for several years. Wallace is expected to take over the spot opened when Lu Dort was traded to Atlanta, alongside max-contract core players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The full payroll is on the Thunder salary page.

What comes next

The rookie-scale deadline for the rest of the league is 6 p.m. ET on Monday, October 19. The Thunder open the regular season at the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, October 20, at 9:30 p.m. ET (Game Center).
