Williams’s three seasons at Santa Clara culminated in a 2021–22 junior campaign with 12 games of at least 20 points. Several performances show the range behind that growth. On November 30, 2021, he scored a college-career-high 30 against Hawai‘i, adding four rebounds and four assists.
Later in the season, he supplied 26 points and the winning basket just before the buzzer against BYU on January 27, 2022. Against No. 22 Saint Mary’s on February 8, he contributed 18 points and 10 assists in an upset victory. He ended the season with 19 points and a college-career-high 15 rebounds against Washington State in the NIT on March 15.
Together, those games make his college path more tangible than the draft slot alone. They include a scoring high, a late-game shot and double-doubles built around different skills, illustrating the different ways he was asked to contribute before entering the NBA.
In 2022–23 with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Williams scored at least 20 points in 17 games and put together a run of 10 consecutive games with 15 or more. He also led NBA rookies in steals, adding defensive activity to the scoring contribution.
His selection to the 2022–23 All-Rookie First Team made him the first former Santa Clara player to receive NBA All-Rookie recognition. The repeated scoring performances matter alongside that award: they show how his contribution became established over a season, rather than depending on a single standout game.
