The Oklahoma City Thunder exercised their 2027-28 team options on Jared McCain and Thomas Sorber and declined Nikola Topić’s $7.48 million option, the team announced in a press release on Sunday, per Rylan Stiles of Locked On NBA.
Sorber’s third-year option is worth $5.12 million and McCain’s fourth-year option $6.78 million. McCain has become an important part of the Thunder’s rotation with injuries up and down the lineup, averaging 10.8 points in 24.7 minutes and starting three of his four games this season. Sorber has yet to play for Oklahoma City: he missed his rookie season with a torn ACL in his right knee and underwent another knee procedure in July that has kept him out this season.
Declining Topić’s option will save the Thunder around $60 million, Justin Martinez of The Oklahoman noted, adding that the decision should be viewed as cost-cutting around the margins rather than a lack of belief in Topić as a prospect. Topić has dealt with a series of injuries since entering the league.
Earlier option coverage: Thunder’s November 2 option call: why $12.6 million for Nikola Topić and Thomas Sorber could cost $60 million.
